Enrol poor family students or face action: govt to pvt schools

Updated on: Sunday, February 06, 2011

The Human Resources Department of the Bihar government today directed private schools to give admission to students from poor families under the Right to
Education Act or be prepared to face action.
The private schools must abide by the REA by giving admission to students from poor families for which a provision of 25 per cent seats has been mooted in the Central Act, the HRD Principal Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh told reporters.

Strict action would be taken against the private schools for non-compliance of the provisions of the REA, he said.

On reports that private schools were proposing to make separate arrangements for students of poor families being enrolled in compliance with REA, Singh said these schools would not be allowed to construct separate infrastructure or provide separate classes to students of the economically weaker sections.

The HRD would scrap registration of such schools for discriminating between the regular students and those from poor families, the principal secretary said.

On the high fees being charged by the private schools, Singh said the state government would pay an annual fee of Rs 2800 per student from poor economic background as has been the norm in this regard.
