MCD ordered to implement EWS quota in its schools

Unable to rein in the private schools on the issue of providing admissions to at least 25 per cent students from the economically weaker sections, the Delhi Government on Wednesday tried to deflect some of the criticism coming its way by bringing the Municipal Corporation of Delhi into the picture and directing it to ensure similar compliance in its schools.

Following a review meeting on the issue, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit directed the MCD to implement the guidelines on EWS students admission in those primary public schools which have been functioning after getting due recognition from the civic body. The Delhi Government has also asked the MCD to furnish a list of violating schools.

At the review meeting, the issue of private schools complying with the EWS stipulations as per the guidelines of the Right to Education Act was discussed at length by the Chief Minister with Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely, Principal Secretary (Education) Rakesh Mohan, Principal Secretary (Law) S.P. Garg, MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra, Director of Education P. Krishnamurthy and Director of Education (MCD).

The Chief Minister later said that the MCD has been told to implement the EWS admission process in true spirit as it is mandatory following the enforcement of RTE Act.

``The MCD has also been instructed to ensure such admissions as necessity of EWS admission is much more in respect of the civic body,’’ she said, adding that the concept and motive of such admissions has also been made clear to the civic body. The civic body has also been told to submit a list of schools violating the EWS norms so that necessary action could be taken against them.

As for several private schools raising their objections to the move on the ground that it would affect their profitability, the Chief Minister expressed hope that the process of such admissions would stabilise. ``The Government is committed to ensure benefit to students coming from economically weaker sections and the EWS quota is also applicable to minority schools,’’ she said.
