Police crackdown on erring drivers of school buses, cabs

Over 550 drivers of school buses and cabs were prosecuted in the capital on a single day for violating traffic rules while ferrying children, police said.
Police launched the drive yesterday after serious concerns were expressed regarding school vans stuffing children in large numbers and ferrying them in an "unsafe and inhuman" manner.
 
"We prosecuted 520 vehicles -- 229 school buses and 291 school vans. 54 vehicles had to be impounded as these were either unauthorisedly carrying school children or in numbers much beyond the seating capacity," Satyendra Garg, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), said.
 
They were charged with offences such as not having driving licences, jumping red light, vehicles having no insurance and driving dangerously.
 
Seeking people's help to check the menace, Garg said, "I solicit the cooperation of all concerned. We will continue the drive against unsafe transportation of children."
