Faculty development programme at UoP

Mumbai: In keeping with the plans of University of Pune to introduce technology and connectivity in its participating institutions, the University today embarked upon yet another ambitious programme – to train the faculty of its institutions and help them adapt to the new technologies.

The initiative aimed at training 1000 faculty during 2009-10 was inaugurated today with the first workshop being held at Pune. The workshop being conducted in partnership with Global Talent Track (GTT) and Cisco entitled ‘Technology Trends in Higher Education’ is aimed at promoting greater awareness and understanding about the application and relevance of technology in the education sector was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor Dr Narendra Jadhav.The event was graced by Dr Pandit Vidyasagar, Director BCUD, Pune University, Dr Sandeep Pachpande, Chairman Industrial Education Society.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Jadhav said, ‘The university believes that the future of education lies in using technology in innovative ways and preparing students to meet the requirements of the industry. The first step towards that direction is to provide meaningful training to the faculty and help them become more aware about the industry requirements.’ Dr Jadhav also spoke about completing the ongoing process of revising the syllabus of all the courses in Pune University colleges by end of Nov 2009.And stated that Pune University will be the 1st Smart University in Asia by February 2010, as they are working on Triple Connectivity, which will connect all colleges of Pune University for audio-visual and data transfer. This will improve the level of governance and help implement Management Information System (MIS).

Dr Pandit Vidyasagar, Director, Board of Curriculum and University Development, University of Pune said, ‘The first batch of faculty consists of 300 faculty who have been chosen to undergo this programme and we have worked closely with GTT to ensure the programme design and content enrich the learning experience of the faculty.’

Dr Uma Ganesh, CEO Global Talent Track who also addressed the gathering highlighted the blurring of line between traditional classroom approach and the technology enabled learning thanks to new tools such as Web 2.0 and the blogs. Dr Ganesh said, ‘ The workshop comprises of many interesting elements such as hands on experience, industry speakers from CISCO, NASSCOM, MCCIA and others as well as visits to industry facilities such as Zensar Technologies and Infosys to get the first hand feel of operations and expectations of the industry.’

GTT has a partnership with University of Pune to train 30,000 students for the ITES industry from one hundred colleges and would be commencing these programmes in various colleges during the academic year 2009-10
