After pondering over various issues of national interest, MAEERS' MIT School of Government architected a significant milestone by successfully organizing the first Parliament of Indian Student Council Leaders (Bharatiya Chatra Sansad) from Jan 12-14 at MIT Campus, Pune. The Sansad brought together general secretaries and joint secretaries of 5000 colleges from different universities of the country. 6000 members of student council participated in the Bharatiya Chatra Sansad with great enthusiasm.
Those attending the inaugural and the valedictory sessions included young parliamentarians, senior political leaders & bureaucrats, media & film personalities, well known academicians, social workers & activists, corporate leaders. With a single minded devotion of channelizing the power of youth, the 'Parliament of All India Student Council Leaders', became a breeding ground for the young, enthusiastic and bright minds committed to lead the society, to effect political changes and to strengthen the democracy.
This collaborative effort involving Ministry of Higher and Technical Education, Maharashtra and MIT School of Government, will certainly be a step forward in educating today's student leaders on different issues of immediate concern and bringing them on a common platform.
The List of topics deliberated on which the resolutions were passed at the summit were ‘India: The super power, India v/s Bharat: Urban rural divide, Developing Grassroots Leadership, Youth participation in Democracy, Opportunities for Youth in Globalized era, State of Women Empowerment today, Role of Corporate Sector in Nation Building, Combating Terrorism, Understanding Naxalism, Emerging threats to Environment, and Is Today’s Media far away from reality?. Each participant was given a form containing the resolution to be passed in each session.
At the end of each session, the issues under discussion were open for voting by the participants. This culminated into drafting of resolutions on all of these. These set of resolutions will be presented to the government of Maharashtra. The resolutions passed in the Bharatiya Chatra Sansad will also be submitted to the Prime Minister of India, to the UNESCO Paris and the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Government of India. All the resolutions will be compiled as the declaration of the Summit.
Students attending the event feel that the initiative has offered valuable guidelines to Gen X towards nation building. The event concluded with the students passing final resolutions on the sessions held during the three-day event. Inspired by the sessions on ‘India— the Super Power by Dr A P J Abdul, ‘Combating Corruption’ by Aruna Roy, ‘Quality Leadership—Key to Nation Building by renowned industrialist Rahul Bajaj and many more have motivated the students to such an extent that they have decided to voluntarily contribute to the society at large. “Taking cue from the sessions at MIT, I have decided to devote myself to the issues concerning the rural areas. To bring about a difference, I strongly feel that the parents of rural children need to be educated. It is also essential to create an awareness of their rights, facilities and services provided to them under various schemes of State and Central government,” said Anand Misra, first-year student from MIT School of Management, Pune.
