Chennai: Even though the global economic slowdown and recession became a bane for engineering colleges, it has turned out to be a boon for medical and dental colleges in the state as more number of students have preferred to join medicine this year.

'Last year, we were facing a lot of hardships, not able to fill up all the seats, especially in dental, but this year, all the medical and dental colleges have filled up their seats with much ease,' chairman of a city-based dental college said on Monday.

A  private university vice-chancellor said more number of students had started approaching the university right from March itself to join M.B.B.S course from which it was evident that fewer students had preferred to join the engineering stream.

The parents  interested admit their kids in the medical colleges rather than engineering colleges, they say that since numerous engineering graduates who had joined IT and other related companies are jobless, due to global economic slowdown and recession, they did not want their children also to face a similar situation.

It may be recalled that last year, more than 50 students who had joined various medical colleges in the state through the government’s single window counselling migrated to engineering stream surrendering their medical seat.
