One more chance for 44 deemed universities

An opportunity will be given to the 44 deemed universities facing de-recognition to respond to the deficiencies pointed out by the Tandon Committee and to rectify them, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Attorney-General G.E. Vahanvati, appearing for the government through the Human Resource Development Ministry, made this submission before a Bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma, after the court wanted it to consider giving them one more opportunity. The Bench directed that status quo in respect of these institutions granted earlier would continue.

The AG said: “In relation to the 44 institutions which have been dealt with in Annexure VII(d) of the report of the committee for Review of Existing Institutions Deemed to be Universities, the Central government will issue individual notices to each institution drawing its attention to the deficiencies and calling for an explanation and response. It is clarified that the institutions shall be entitled to not only give a reply on the deficiencies but to make a representation as to the status vis-à-vis the deficiencies.”

Thereafter, each of them would be heard separately, and then the Centre would pass a “reasoned report in this behalf in relation to each institution and place a comprehensive report to the court.”
