The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will process applications for approval of new polytechnics from the coming academic year and decide on extension of recognition of polytechnics and courses offered.
The Ministry of Human Resources Development, in a communication early this week, has stated that the AICTE would, hereafter, process applications under all categories for polytechnics, said Professor P. Mannar Jawahar, chairman, Southern Regional Committee, AICTE.
The MHRD was handling all applications from polytechnics till 2001 and directed the Director of Technical Education (DTE) in each State to process the applications, probably burdened by work in the wake of the boom in engineering education across the country.
As the AICTE has developed an online system to process approvals from technical institutions, including engineering colleges, it has asked the DTEs to stop processing applications, Mr. Jawahar said.
According to DTE officials, the MHRD communication has informed the government that the AICTE would process applications directly through its online system and deal with the polytechnics directly.
