TN unveils major educational, science plans

The TN govt on Friday announced a world class science city in Chennai and new colleges and universities for the rural and urban communities in the state.

Listing the government's upcoming projects in his customary address to the assembly on the opening day of its first session of 2011, Governor Surjit Singh Barnala said that discretionary quota in allotment of houses and plots will be abolished.

In an effort to help coconut farmers in the state, coconut oil will now be used in the government's noon meal programme.

New arts and science colleges have also been announced in Kancheepuram, Thoothukudi, Dharmapuri, Villupuram and Virudhunagar districts.

Barnala said the proposed world class mega science city will bring together more than 69 institutions under its umbrella.

New medical colleges have also been announced for Ramanathapuram, Cuddalore and Dindigul to fulfill the objective of having one medical college in every district, the governor said.
