Free stationery for students soon

Students of Chennai Schools will get free geometry boxes and stationery in a few days. The Corporation will launch a scheme to distribute them on January 11.

Speaking at the inauguration of sanitary napkins incinerators installed at Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School at Purasawalkam on Friday, Mayor M. Subramanian said students going to the middle and high schools run by the civic body would get the free geometry boxes. He said the civic body has introduced several schemes such as free uniforms, dictionaries and shoes in the past few years.

Free sanitary napkins are being distributed at a cost of Rs.73.77 lakh to students of 63 Chennai Schools. He said the use of sanitary napkins would ensure better health of the students. The scheme would also ensure students are aware of the importance of safe disposal of sanitary napkins.

The incinerators procured at a total cost of Rs.16.44 lakh have been installed in the 63 Chennai Schools, benefitting nearly 33,000 students.

Highlighting the recently launched training programme for students along with FIITJEE, he said 80 students are undergoing training to prepare for competitive examinations. Free bus passes would be given to them in a week to enable them to attend classes. Every year, 40 students would be trained to gain admission in institutions such as IIT.

The civic agency provides Rs.25,000 every year towards the educational expenses of students pursuing engineering and medical courses, he said.

Officials of the civic agency said the Corporation has implemented various developmental works and schemes worth Rs.5.62 crore to improve the quality of education in the past four years.
