Childrens Science Congress unveiled at Chennai

The 18th Childrens Science Congress was unveiled on Jan 4th at the SRM campus in Kattankulathur, Chennai, by the Indian born Nobel Laureate, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan.

Earlier, on the previous day, Jan 3rd, the PM Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated the 98th Indian Science Congress at the same venue calling for the young scientist to think out of the box.

Speaking at inauguration of the congress, Venkatraman stated that science is the logical findings of the things around the world of us.

The theme for this year Children's Science Congress is "Land Resources".

Venkatraman, the Indian-born American structural biologist, who shared the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, emphatically stated, Unlike cricketers and film personalities, the findings of a scientist doesn't carry the pride of the nation he/she belongs, instead the findings are actually meant for a global cause and for the entire humanity.

He also stressed the fact that the present findings cannot be framed as truth since forthcoming discoveries would surpass present findings.

Handing over awards to 14 young scientists from various colleges and universities with cash prize of Rs 25, 000/- and a certificate, he called for such awards to young students from schools.

In the later part of the day, an exhibition with around 100 stalls was inaugurated. National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) with 24 stalls and National Centre for Science Communicators with 66 modules had in display for the visiting school students.
