Not many joining ITIs?

Though there is an increasing demand for skilled manpower for industries here, the number of students who prefer to join Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) is relatively less.

President of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (CODISSIA) M. Kandhaswami says the number of engineering colleges and higher education institutes has increased. Hence, most students prefer to go for higher education.

An official of the Department of Employment and Training says the response for ITI courses depend on the location of the institute too. It is good in places such as Madurai.

In Coimbatore or Chennai, the options for higher education are more. “They get multiple placement offers,” says Mr. Kandhaswami.

Since industrial growth is high, the units' need for manpower is also more. An official of a government ITI here points out that while the institute used to receive about 20,000 applications earlier for 400 seats, it now gets only about 2,000 applications. However, each student gets seven to eight placement orders.
