The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry today cleared Rs 22 crore as central assistance to the UGC as expenditure towards sanction of the Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowships to SC students to pursue higher studies.
Official sources said that this would come into effect from April 2011.
The government also increased the number of slots of fellowships awarded from 1,333 to 2,000.
Through this central scheme, launched in 2005-06, financial assistance is provided each year for 1333 Research Fellowships belonging to Scheduled Caste students pursuing M. Phil., Ph.D. and equivalent courses.
