Dr. Kalam inaugurates LEAP education project

Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today inaugurated 'Athulyam', a comprehensive Non-formal Education programme at a function held at the Durbar hall of the government Secretariat here.
Speaking at the function, Kalam said a national level system should be evolved for continuing literacy programmes in the country.

Kalam described Kerala government's `Athulyam' programme as an innovative venture seeking to impart skilled education. Such schemes should be emulated by other states, he said.

The country should also focus on e-education as it had tremendous potential in future, he said.

State Education Minister M A Baby, who also spoke, said the project was a unique literacy project as part of the continuing education scheme under the Life Long Education and Awareness Progrmame (LEAP) of the Kerala Literacy Mission Authority, with a view to ensure life education to people.

Under the project, 140 local bodies situated in backward areas of each of the 140 assembly constituencies in the State had been selected to implement the project.

Prabhakaran Pazhassi, Director, Leap Kerala Mission, State Minister for Local Self-Governance Paloli Mohammed Kutty and Poet Sugatha Kumari were among those present on the occasion.

Earlier, at another function held at Kanakakkunnu palace, Kalam released a book by Opposition leader Oommen Chandy titled `Janasabdathinu Nalpathandu (Forty years of peoples' voice), a compilation Chandy's speeches in the assembly.
