In general and vocational colleges of Navi Mumbai, the student-teacher ratio is as high as in any municipal school in densely populated areas facing a staff shortage. The highest student-teacher ratio of 125:1 is in vocational colleges, followed by 113:1 in general colleges. Interestingly among students, though the enrolment of boys in Navi Mumbai colleges is increasing fast, the enrolment of girls is comparatively steady.
In a few sections like management, medical and general institutions, girls show impressive enrolment rates. In engineering and BEd colleges, the student-teacher ratio is normal at 40:1.
A recent Cidco survey revealed that there was a shortage of faculty in certain areas of education. Enrolment rose from 1,06,951 in 2005-06 to 1,41,488 in 2008-09. If considered sex-wise, the enrolment of boys increased from 70,330 in 2005-06 to 95,169 in 2008-09, whereas the enrolment of girls went up from 26,621 to 46,319 during the same period.
