The six new National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) will offer PhDs to pharmacy students from the next academic session. This is a welcome move considering NIPER Mohali is the only institute currently offering doctoral programmes whereas the industry requirement is huge and unmet. India needs around 1000 trained pharma personnel every ear as opposed to the 150 NIPER Mohali is producing.
The institutes will offer ten doctoral seats initially. The numbers will increase as the academic capacities of the institutes develop. The NIPERs have been offering only Masters programmes but the steering committee on new NIPERs, under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, yesterday decided to offer doctoral research avenues in these institutes following a mounting demand for cutting-edge technologists from the blooming pharma and health sector which short of human resources.
