The Department of Management Studies, Anna University, Tiruchi, conducted a three-day International Conference on Operations Research Applications in Engineering and Management (ICOREM) last week.
With the theme, ‘Applications of Operations Research in Decision Making’, the conference provided a forum for researchers from developing and developed countries to interact and discuss issues pertaining to OR applications in all areas of engineering and management.
Explaining the purpose of the conference, Department Head M. Mathirajan said that the electronic economy required managers and executives to make better and faster operational and strategic decisions in a scenario wherein globalisation and the Internet were shifting and redefining relationships with customers, suppliers, partners and competitors. In the fast paced and hectic environment, the role of OR was increasingly viewed as a necessity for analysing and running a business.
P. Balasubramanian, an IT industry veteran of three decades and Founder and CEO of Theme Work Analytics, Purdue Research Park, West Lafayette, Indiana, USA, delivered the keynote address and inaugurated the conference. Vice-chancellor V. Ramachandran presided. About 400 contributed papers, including 20 from abroad, were presented.
NSS volunteers of Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute, Navalur Kuttapattu, took part in a special camp at Alampattipudur to create environmental awareness among villagers.
The camp commenced with tree planting under the leadership of Dean S. Jeyaraman. About 200 saplings of Thespesia (Poovarasu) were planted in the vicinity of the municipal school. The volunteers also undertook cleaning of roadsides, school, and places of workshop, and explained the importance of recycling waste instead of burning it. They provided an orientation on mushroom cultivation and apiary enterprises, and explained the prospects for running piggery units.
As part of the camp, volunteers conducted a health camp in collaboration with the primary health centre of Inamkulathur. About hundred villagers were diagnosed and free medicines were distributed. They also conducted a veterinary camp at Alampattipudur. In all, 200 head of cattle and pets were vaccinated for foot and mouth disease and cowpox. They devoted a session to explain the importance of blood donation, and also created awareness on drip irrigation and system of rice intensification.
Second-year MBA students of J.J. College of Engineering and Technology hosted a dinner for the aged people, orphans and physically challenged people under the care of Kangaroo Trust to mark their farewell function, recently.
A group of physically challenged people conducted an orchestra, as part of the cultural programme organised by the students.
The Humanities and Science Association of Shri Angalamman College of Engineering and Technology conducted valediction of the association activities recently.
N. Saiva Raju, Professor and Coordinator presented the annual report of academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular performances of the student members. Presiding over the session, college director D. Rajaraman spoke on skill development and goal setting. W. Chirstraj, principal, spoke on the strategy to achieve success.
A day-long workshop on ‘Multi Purpose Lab Station’(MPLS) organised by the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Saranathan College of Engineering, recently benefited 40 teaching and technical staff of 10 colleges in Tiruchi and Thanjavur districts.
S. Malayappan, principal, inaugurated the workshop. A. Senthil, Senior Science Engineer, Elmack Engineering Services, made a presentation on the use of MPLS in calibrating cathode ray oscilloscope, function generators, and multi-meters. He dwelt on the fundamental concepts of calibration and the utility of the equipment for varieties of applications in science and technology.
