Parents swarming outside the centres of the national-level FIITJEE Talent Reward Exam (FTRE) 2011 held on Sunday had mixed feelings of anxiety and curiosity.
“Through the result of this exam he can benchmark his performance,” said P. Padmakumar, a parent of a class X student. He saw the exam as an opportunity to assess his son P. Aditya's aptitude in competitive exams.
The exam organised by FIITJEE and The Hindu Education Plus had two papers. Students in Class X and XII were tested in IQ, physics, chemistry and mathematics and students of classes V to IX were tested in IQ, mathematics and science.
Parents were briefed on the career options available particularly in engineering and were briefed about various national-level examinations such as NTSE, KVPY, Olympiads, IIT-JEE, AIEEE, SAT-I and SAT-II. The counselling session was an opportunity to clear their queries on the avenues open to students.
The exams will enable students to assess where they stand and help them work on their shortcomings, said Nishant Tripathi, a faculty at FIITJEE. The results of the exam and the Rank Potential Index (RPI) of the test takers will be announced on January 2011.
The FTRE was held for students from Class V to IX in four centres in the City: Maharishi Vidya Mandir Higher Secondary School, Maharshi International Residential School, Chettinad Vidyashram and Devi Academy.
The top 500 performers in the exams will be awarded certificates, scholarships and fee waivers for the FIITJEE coaching classes that prepare students for the IIT-JEE.
Around 14,500 students wrote the exam in Chennai and more than 1 lakh students took the exam all over India.
