NAAC disclosed on Wednesday that fifteen colleges in Bihar have lost their accreditation due to their failure to renew it before its five-year validity expiry.
According to National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), only two colleges have managed to renew their accreditation in the right time, namely Patna Women's College and St. Xavier's College of Education. Both these colleges were awarded the A grade status. The state of Bihar now has only 21 accredited colleges.
NAAC is responsible for providing accreditation to higher education institutions in India. Colleges in Bihar had been given accreditation on or before May 25, 2005. The Council has now warned institutions not to mislead students by showing their old accreditation and without getting it renewed.
Among the 15 institutes that have lost their accreditation, 12 colleges came under Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU). The university still has 14 colleges operating under it, which is the highest in the state.
There are around 290 colleges in Bihar that are recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) but only a few of them have valid accreditation from the NAAC.
The state has a quota of 18 colleges that can be awarded 'Potential for Excellance' tag by the UGC. However, only four have been awarded under the scheme that provides Rs.1 crore to the awarded college for development work.
