UGC relaxes norms for PhD students

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has relaxed the tough new norms were introduced last year. Those students who had applied for their PhD before June 2011 will not be required to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) as proposed in the previous norms. Also, students holding PhDs from reputed foreign universities will be exempted from appearing for the NET in order to be eligible for teaching.

The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the UGC. The commission had been recommended by a panel to relax its norms in August this year in order to examine several concerns that were raised by the various stakeholders.

Although the commission has relaxed some of its norms, it has also come out with tougher entry norms for teachers in higher education along with regulations for stricter standards in PhD programmes.

The new regulations aim at improving the quality of teachers of the country as well as to overcome the massive shortage of faculty that is being faced by the higher education sector in the country.
