While established Western countries and a few nearer Asia have been attracting the now-globalised Indian student, the University of Malta (UM) is the latest in the line. UM has a plethora of established and a few innovative courses. The state-run university of the European island country currently has about 10 per cent of its students from other countries. “The number is only increasing considering our long standing reputation of high standards of education,” says Stefania Fabri, Director, University of Malta.
In India to meet with educational institutes and students keen to develop educational exchanges with Malta, Fabri believes this is the best time to take higher education to another level. “The University of Malta already has 100 odd collaborations with prime institutes in the USA, Europe and other countries. Under these we are running various joint programmes that help us bring internationalisation to the campus. The country as a higher educational hub has done well with English being the medium of communication, moderate tuition fees, economical accommodation and living expenses, and frontiers with developed nations,” she says.
The University of Malta is known for its faculties of Arts, Built Environment, Dental Surgery, Economics, Management and Accountancy, Education, Engineering, Information and Communication Technology, Law, Medicine and Surgery, Sciences, Theology and Health Sciences. “Besides these, our Edward de Bono Institute for the Design and Development of Thinking has been attracting a lot of Indian students looking to develop their creative and innovation skills. In fact, out of five Indian students at the campus today, four are part of its course,” she says.
Being a state-run, non-profit institution, UM doesn’t have many scholarships on offer like other global universities, but for those who would like some financial support while going for foreign education, Fabri suggests the Erasmus Scholarship.
With admissions currently on, UM requires candidates to have an adequate general educational background apt for tertiary studies. Those who want to make Malta their harbour, may log on to www.um.edu.mt
