Private schools warned against hiking fee

Delhi Govt severly warned all the pvt schools against hiking fee on the pretext of providing free education to 25 per cent of students belonging to Economically Weaker Sections(EWS).

As per provision of the RTE Act, all the schools have to reserve 25 per cent of their total seats for EWS and the city government has already announced that the private schools will be financially compensated by it for providing education
to the poor children.

A day after allowing private schools to frame their own guidelines for nursery admission, speaking at a formal meeting of the representatives of private schools, Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely warned against any sort of fees hike. Several city schools had indicated that they would increase the school fee to compensate the cost for admitting the EWS children.

"We will not allow any school to hike fee," Lovely said.

Lovely said till last year those schools which took government land had to keep 15 per cent seats for EWS students but now they have to increase it by 10 per cent more for which education department will bear the cost.

He said students from families whose annual income does not cross Rs one lakh will be eligible for admission under EWS category.

Government will provide financial compensation for all 25 per cent students to those private schools which are not built on government land.

"We are working out on the finer details for the finacial package for the private schools," he said.

Delhi government yesterday had come out with broad guidelines for admission to nursery classes virtually giving almost total leeway to private schools to set their own criteria for the enrolment of children.
