Gujarat govt flays Centre over new medical colleges

The Gujarat Government has charged the Centre with adopting discriminatory attitude over approval of new medical colleges in the BJP-ruled state.

The delay in approving new colleges has resulted in 40 per cent vacancies not getting filled up in the state government-run hospitals, Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas told reporters here today.

While Union Government is quick to approve application of some other states, a different stand is taken in case of Gujarat when it comes to sanctioning medical institutes despite the state fulfilling all requirements, he alleged.

Vyas was speaking to the media after laying the foundation stone of a medical college and hospital at Gotri on the city's outskirts. The 750-bed hospital will come up with a cost of Rs 225 crore.

"We shall fight it out and are determined to open ten new medical colleges in a time-bound manner," he said.

In September 2009, Union Health Ministry had returned to Gujarat all the four applications forwarded by the state seeking permission to open new medical colleges.
