SAARC nations complain over higher fees for their students

Several SAARC countries complained about discriminatory treatment meted out to their students in some universities in India, the Lok Sabha was informed today.

Nepal has brought it to the Government's notice that higher fees were being charged from its students by some universities, while Bhutan has complained that its students were being asked to pay the fees in foreign currency, Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said in a written reply.

She said the University Grants Commission resolution of September 25, 2009 in this regard was for an equal treatment for students of Nepal and Bhutan at par with Indian students in higher education.

The universities were autonomous and the matter of fee fixation was in accordance with statute, ordinance, regulations/rules governing the same for each university, she said.

The Minister said the UGC resolution requested the Government to take up the issue of reciprocal provision for fee for Indian students studying in Nepal and Bhutan, but the Government was yet to do so.
