Govt to introduce vocational education in automotive sector

Aiming to cater to the huge shortfall of skilled employees, the HRD ministry has formed a core group to develop a curriculum for vocational training for automotive sector.

"The core group will give its recommendations to the MHRD in three months regarding the course curriculum which is need based and caters to different aspects of the automobile industry. There is a huge shortfall in this sector", HRD Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters here.
Highlighting that 56 per cent of India's economic growth comes from service sector, he said 39 million students pass out from class 12 annually but only one million of them get empowered through vocational education.

This sector generates annual revenue of nearly Rs two lakh crore and provides opportunity for employment to at least 13 million people.

Sibal said the committee would also consult industry leaders in the automotive sector to develop the curriculum as also for the support system for hands-on training, virtual and software training.

He said once the formalities are complete, the vocational course will be introduced for students from class nine to class 12 and even in polytechnics and colleges.

The minister said as of now this would be introduced in CBSE-affiliated schools and with the participation of state governments in order to decentralise the process.
