Loyola students win laurels at international event

Loyola college students from chennai city have won the fourth place at the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) World Cup 2010 held at Los Angeles, in which 39 countries and 1,500 colleges and universities participated.

The students were awarded the fourth place for the overall impact created by their development-oriented projects in the villages of Tirunelveli and Tuticorin.

"Our projects concentrate on giving not charity but providing sustainable economic development opportunities and uplift the downtrodden," said Jayadev Sreekanth, president of SIFE, Loyola College.

The group worked with farmers in Tirunelveli, teaching them organic farming and ways to increase their yeild. In Tuticorin district, the group worked with toddy tappers to create awareness about the abundant uses of the products of the plam tree and capitalise on them. Impressed by the change brought about by the students, Erbacher Foundation of Germany awarded them 25,000 euros to intensify their project.

Colleges from Egypt, China and the US respectively won the first three places.
