The broad and deep relationship between India and the United States clearly reflects the desire to find new ways to engage.
Partnerships underway between India and America have expanded substantially in recent years and the growing number of students travelling between the two countries provides tangible evidence of a growing partnership. Taking ties in the field of education to the next level, India and United States will hold their first education summit next year.
“Building on our successful efforts to expand educational exchanges, including the Singh Obama Knowledge Initiative, we’ll convene a summit to forge new collaborations in higher education. And we are announcing two initiatives to deliver progress to our people,” US President Barack Obama announced during his joint press conference with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently.
“Because knowledge is the currency of the 21st century, we’ll increase exchanges between our students, colleges and universities, which are among the best in the world,” Obama said when he addressed MPs from both houses of parliament.
The high level summit that has been finalised will finally see leading US varsities come to India. Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal — who has been working hard to invite American universities to India, with Yale being the latest one to forge ties with the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur and Indian Institute of Management-Kozhikode — was at Hyderabad house when the summit was firmed up.
According to HRD Ministry sources, there could be more tie-ups in the near future as many heads of universities — the University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University, Cornell University, Boston University etc., who accompanied the President showed an interest in India.
