Development of future power engineers

If you’re looking at a career in the booming electrical power industry, renewable generation and sustainability, the School of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton (UK) has launched an M.Sc. course in Energy and Sustainability with Electrical Power Engineering.

Informed Dr. Paul Lewin, Course Co-ordinator, “This new intensive, one-year course is designed to meet a growing specific industrial need — the development of future power engineers capable of meeting the challenge of providing secure sustainable energy to consumers in the most efficient and cost-effective way possible.” How-ever, students should have a degree in engineering, physics or applied mathematics. The course syllabus is designed to ensure that students are exposed to key topics in all areas. Optional courses provide an opportunity for the latest research in cutting-edge areas to be incorporated into the course.

The M.Sc. involves a substantial individual research summer project lasting three months. This offers students an opportunity to explore the areas covered in the course in depth. “Students will also be able to use the resources in the Tony Davies High Voltage Laboratory, one of only a few in Europe. The fee for students enrolling for the 2011-12 session is £14,460, ” added Lewin.
