10 Schools of Excellence opened

A total of 200 students of Chennai Schools have been selected for undergoing rigorous coaching for IIT-JEE, said Mayor M.Subramanian.

Inaugurating 10 Chennai Schools of Excellence here on Saturday, he said, “Hard working students belonging to the weaker sections will be given free coaching for IIT-JEE. The civic body has allocated a sum of Rs. 2.54 crore for training the students towards helping them gain entry in the Indian Institutes of Technology.”

The 10 schools would reach their full potential in three years, the Mayor said. Classrooms, laboratories and libraries of the schools would receive Quality Control of India certification.

The notification for admissions to the schools for the next academic year would be made in the first week of March. Apart from appropriate technological inputs for better learning, the schools would focus more on strengthening ethical values of all students. The number of students per class in primary sections would be 30 and it would be 40 for other classes. The students would have joint cultural, educational and literary programmes with good private schools.

The schools declared as Schools of Excellence are Chennai Higher Secondary School, Appasamy Lane, Old Washermenpet; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Madhavaram High Road, Perambur; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Pulla Avenue, Shenoy Nagar; Chennai High School, V.P.Koil Street, Mylapore; Chennai Boys Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Nungambakkam; Chennai Higher Secondary School, Puliyur, Kodambakkam; Chennai Boys Higher Secondary School, Saidapet; Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School, Saidapet; and Chennai Higher Secondary School, Thiruvanmiyur.

The schools would admit students from kindergarten to class XII in both Tamil and English medium. Chennai Corporation Deputy Commissioner (Education) M. Balaji was present.
