Conference lays focus on proactive reforms in school education

Speakers at a conference organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry stressed the need to bring in more proactive reforms in school education that go beyond a student's success.

The School Excellence Conclave on ‘Preparing Next Gen School Leadership', held here on Saturday, also highlighted the need to keep the staff in tune with the requirements of the changing environment.

Addressing the inaugural session, C.R. Swaminathan, Chairman, Education and Employability Sub Committee of CII, Southern Region, said school leadership was among the top priorities in the education reform policy of the government. “India will have to gear up to its education requirements. There is a huge shortage of talent in sectors including hospitality, retail and aviation,” he said. According to a study, he said, lack of quality education was holding India from economic growth. Our methodology of teaching has to change and we need to test the analytical skills of children.

40% increase

According to data from District Information System of Education, in five years since 2002 there was a 40 per cent increase in setting up of primary schools, said A.Senthil Kumaran, Principal Counsellor, CII Institute of Quality. The student teacher ratio has improved from 39 in 2004 to 34 in 2007. “But, we need to find how the new generation of leaders are adapting to new requirements for the next generation,” he said.

Pradipta K. Mohapatra, Chairman, Taskforce on Trade Fairs, CII (SR), spoke on the qualities that make a good leader. A leader should keep enhancing intellectual development, he said.
