Majority of Indian employees said the recent economic downturn was well tackled as 70 per cent of them said they were well aware of the likelihood of
downsizing in an organisation, thereby helping them stay prepared.
According to staffing services firm TeamLease Services' "Restoration @ Workplace" survey, workforce in Ahmedabad and Hyderabad appreciated their employer's efforts. Around 43 per cent of Kolkata's employees did not face any threat from
recession.
The survey findings further said that the commitment to work and good performance insulated one from any adverse extraneous conditions.
"The last downturn was difficult for everybody but a huge upside has been busting the cultural myth that the Indian workforce disagrees with sharp performance management or an "eat-what-you-kill" culture," TeamLease Services Vice
President, IT Sourcing Surabhi Mathur-Gandhi said.
According to 50 per cent of employees, the recall procedure post-recession was managed well by the organisations.
Overall, 47 per cent employees said that companies are more cautious these days while hiring a new employee and they expect more productivity even from a new joinee.
"As growth comes back, companies that do not act on the realisation that tolerating non-performers punishes performers may have a tough time retaining talent. But business cycles are here to stay and while this does not make them easier to handle, the Indian workforce has clearly come of age – or lost its innocence," Mathur-Gandhi added.
The incidence of red slips issue was higher in Pune and Delhi, TeamLease said.
The survey, which analysed the impact of recent economic downturn on the Indian workforce, covered 350 working professionals and 50 HR professionals across key cities in India namely New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.
