ThinkLABS, an IIT-Bombay incubated company today signed a MoU with UK-based University of Salford and launched a joint certified PG programme in Robotics and Embedded Systems.
It will be first-of-its-kind collaboration between a Tech Alumni-led organisation and UK University, with a course model which has education programme in both India and UK, ThinkLABS, Head College Business Gaurav Chaturvedi said.
"The 18-month course with dissertation project, will begin next academic year (2011) and we are finalising the course and working on the final fee structure," Salford University Vice-Chancellor Martin Hall told PTI.
ThinkLABS, with its core competence in embedded system (like smartphone, mobile phone, air-conditioning) and some robotics is on a mission to simplify complex concepts in science, technology and engineering through hands-on training
to students, he said.
"Along with the University of Salford which specialises in robotics, we will develop the market and deliver the course for students," Chaturvedi said.
This will also be one of the first PG courses in Robotics (duration 18 months) with exposure in India and UK, Chaturvedi said adding the collaboration will also have joint research.
Both institutes will be teaching and developing new educational programmes besides having student and staff exchange events, Hall, who signed MoU with Chaturvedi said.
Robotics and embedded systems are niche areas which are growing at phenomenal rates, internationally and have great applications in various industries like manufacturing, surgery, services, nuclear technology, research, artificial intelligence, and aviation.
In India, there is a dearth of first-rate course in this area, Chaturvedi said, adding with this course students will not only have access to the best of technical education both at ThinkLABS and Salford University, but also increase their
employability quotient.
"While other course modalities are being worked out, some of the course details have been decided upon," Hall said adding students will spend one semester in India and the other semester at University of Salford.
Robotics at Salford has consistently been ranked in top 20 courses of the field in UK. It continues to attract a lot of Indian students with around of them enrolling for the course last year, Hall said.
"They will visit the University of Salford for the second semester and the dissertation," he said.
