The Mechanical Training Institute was a key training establishment in Indian Air Force and contributed significantly by producing several thousand qualified Airmen, Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma, Air Officer Commanding, IAF Station, Tambaram, said on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters at a function as part of the platinum jubilee (75 years) celebrations of the Institute in Tambaram, he said it was the only one of its kind in the whole of IAF. Airmen were trained in propulsion, structures and weaponry in line with the ever changing requirements of IAF, considering the induction of new equipment and aircraft.
The Institute not only created personnel for maintaining IAF's fleet of aircraft or its equipment, but complete soldiers, the Air Warriors. Over the years, a number of trainees from overseas Air Forces, especially from South East Asian and African nations were also trained here.
Air Commodore Sanjay Sharma also released ‘Yaanthriki' a coffee table book in Hindi and gave away prizes to personnel and civilian staff who had won in various literary competitions in Hindi. Group Caption A.K.Verma, Commanding Officer, MTI, was present.
