As part of the measures being taken to ensure safety of school children, the Chennai Police have offered to be part of the Parent-Teacher Association.
“Parent-Teacher Association shall henceforth be Parent-Teacher-Police Association. We have asked schools to invite the local Assistant Commissioner of Police or Inspector for their periodical meetings,” Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said after addressing school principals on Tuesday.
He said many schools had informed him that surveillance cameras have been installed on their campuses. “We have emphasised that all schools should have a security officer to coordinate with the local police. Besides having counselors to handle behavioral problems of students, schools should sensitise them on online safety. Some students meet strangers online and also get to meet them without the knowledge of their parents,” he said.
Vidya Reddy of Tulir wondered whether the Child Abuse Complaint Cell in the Directorate of School Education was functioning. “We tried calling them many times to know how many complaints have reached the cell and who was handling them etc… but they don't even know that such a cell is functioning in that number. The creation of the cell was announced in the Assembly,” she said. Ms. Reddy said educators had a vital role to play in averting child abuse because students spent most of their time in schools. Schools could be a source of child abuse… children should be educated on personal and online safety, she added.
Additional Commissioners of Police Shakeel Akhter (Law and Order) and Sanjay Arora (Crimes) were present. Principals/teachers from various city schools took part.
