Victoria Memorial Hall and British Council jointly hosted a Children’s Day programme, at the Victoria Memorial premises on Sunday, November 14, 2010 to celebrate the spirit and involvement of the youth in conservation and protection of the environment.
The event was addressed by Prof C Panda, secretary and curator, Victoria Memorial Hall, followed by a brief introduction session by Samrajit Guha, head of Programmes, British Council.
The event was open to the public and included children who had participated in the “Green Ideas” contest, an initiative from the British Council designed to help put eco-visionary ideas of children into action.
“Children are the future, and if they don’t start taking an initiative from now, no one will. I can take back so many ideas of how to save my planet from today’s programme”, said one of the parents who had attended the meet.
With urban centers expanding rapidly throughout the world, the challenge of making them sustainable becomes even more pressing. “Green Ideas” is designed to assist and initiate new projects that motivate people through children to conserve the environment for a greener future.
Climate champions, selected from across 60 countries around the world directly encourage the young generation (aged 18 to 23) with a proactive interest in climate change, motivating them to create awareness at the local, national as well as at the international level. The climate champion network currently has 3000 members, 155 of them are from India.
Children were also treated with a special screening of “Leopards in a Lurch”, a film by Gurmeet Sapal. The film is about villagers in Uttaranchal, who are the major perpetrator of crimes against leopards. The film also captured the threat of Leopards near villages.
“The idea was to enlighten the children with an interesting documentary about the Human-Animal relationship. Everyone enjoyed watching it and participated in the quiz with a lot of enthusiasm”, said Guha. He went on to add “Parents encouraging their children and accompanying them is also a positive sign for the cause”.
The program concluded with the prize distribution of the winners of the Green Ideas contest, followed by a vote of thanks.
