A lesson in teaching science

Broken cloth hangers, pet bottles, plastic, water, cabbage, dry ice… these tools are more than enough to bring in curiosity in class while teaching science. More than 200 teachers were taught simple techniques with these tools at a session chaired by Subbiah Pandian, associate professor of physics, Presidency College, to explain centrifugal force, inertia, atmospheric pressure, Newton's Laws, acid test and longitudinal waves.

Workshop

A two-day workshop on ‘Emerging trends in science teaching,' organised by C.S.I. Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Federation of Science Clubs of Tamil Nadu, concluded here on Saturday. The main objective was to equip teachers with practical and scientific approaches to make science lessons more fun and interesting.

Eight resource persons from different institutions conducted session for the teachers. Mr. Pandian grabbed the attention of the audience with his easy-to-do experiments.

Vatsala Santhanam, chemistry teacher at C.S.I. Bains Matriculation Higher Secondary School, said two experiments is equivalent to two pages a child has to read. At least one demonstration could be carried out in a class, she said.

V. Sigamani, Diocesan Education Officer, said the initiative was taken as teachers need to be oriented with new approaches to teaching science.

J. Daniel Chellappa, president, Federation of Science Clubs of Tamil Nadu, said it was organising such orientation programmes with schools and colleges to revive interest in science and institution could approach the Federation.
