Karwar: Anand Asnotikar, the Minister for Fisheries, Science and Technology, said that a government engineering college will start functioning at Karwar from this academic year. Talking to the reporters here on Monday, he said it would be housed in the government polytechnic for the time being.
Fourteen acres of land had already been identified at Sanmudgeri near Majali village at Goa border to construct an independent building for the college. Asnotikar said that all formalities had been completed at government level to establish the college.
He said the members from All India Council For Technical Education was expected shortly to give its approval for the college.
He said four branches of engineering including mechanical, civil and automobile branches besides computer science would be introduced in the college. Asnotikar expressed confidence that there would not be any staff crunch for the college.
This will be third engineering college and first government college in the district.
There are private engineering colleges at Bhatkal and Haliyal at present. Asnotikar said that the 300 district hospital here can meet the needs of a medical college also.
According to him the district hospital has an area of 30 acres. In view of that he would propose the establishment of a medical college at Karwar.
