CBSE clarifies doubts on final exam for Class X

Enlightening parents on numerous doubts sorrounding the final exam for class X, the CBSE has come out with a set of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).

Further more to provide teachers with appropriate marking scheme to do away with possible disparities in evaluation, the CBSE also also plans to undertake "moderation of marks based on marks distribution of students and random verification of the assessment done by the school," the note said.

"We have been instructed to stack both the formative and summative assessment papers of every candidate taking the exams so that the board can verify their performance. There cannot be a sudden spurt or decline in a student's SA2 marks. Also, we will only be giving inputs to the board about a student's performance through the year as the final report card or document will be printed by them. This may provide an opportunity for the board to scrutinise each student's performance, if the need arises," said R Aruna, vice-principal, Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Senior Secondary School.

Under the exam reforms introduced by the board, students are to attempt a Summative Assessment - II (SA2) exam, conducted either by the school or the board, at the end of the academic year that will account for 40% of their overall grade. "We have also been told that it is our prerogative to admit all our students in class XI. While students taking the school-conducted SA2 will be given priority, we are not supposed to deny admission to a candidate who after taking the board-conducted SA2 and failing to get admission in any other school comes back to us," she added.

While students are expected to give in writing beforehand whether they would opt for the school-conducted SA2 or the board-conducted SA2 exam, the board would permit a change of options this year, the note said. All such requests, duly forwarded by the school, would have to reach the office of the Board by December 15, 2010.
