MBA loses its worth in TN Govt institutions

MBA degree, once deemed as a coveted academic qualification, has lost its charm in Tamil Nadu government departments.

In July 1977 the government had introduced the scheme which provided for sanctioning two advance increments to MBA degree holding staff working in the departments where their management qualification could be utilised. It was then felt that the management knowledge gained by the staff through their academic qualification would be of some help in administrative work as well.

With many universities offering management degree through easy-to-obtain' distance education programmes, the government has finally decided to scrap a 33-year-old scheme under which government servants were given two additional increments if they acquired a MBA degree as an additional qualification.

However, latedly the government has realised that getting a MBA degree is no longer a difficult or specialised achievement or that they acquired worthy management knowledge.

"While introducing the scheme, acquiring MBA was rare and no possibilities existed through distance education& It is noticed that over a period of time, the number of universities has proliferated and almost all the universities offer this degree through distance education," R Kannan principal secretary, Tamil Nadu department of personnel and administrative reforms has said in a recent government order.

Taking into consideration the above facts, the government has decided to cancel the GOs issued in 1977 and 1978 regarding sanction of two advance increments to those who already posses a MBA degree from the "recognised universities (including open universities) and this system is dispensed with, from the date of issue of this order," Kannan said.
