Did not affiliate 'fake' institute running on campus: IIT-Kgp

Coming clear on the controversy over an alleged fake institute running on its campus, IIT Kharagpur today said it has not affiliated the centre and
documents supporting its recognition were "forged".
The institute had last month suspended Amit Kumar Ghosh, head of the department of aeronautical engineering, charging him with running the engineering institute called Institution of Electrical Engineers (India) (IEE) in the IIT campus.

"IIT Kharagpur is in no way connected in either affiliating or recognising the degree/diploma of the so-called IEE," IIT Kgp registrar T K Ghosal said in a statement today.

IIT Kgp had conducted an internal investigation after students of the IEE lodged a complaint with IIT Kgp director Damodar Acharya alleging that Ghosh was charging exorbitant fees for admission to the IEE.

Ghosal said former director K L Chopra, whose name has also cropped up in the controversy for allegedly giving permission to IEE, has disclosed that he has not given any such permission and such letters with his signature have been
"forged".

"It may please be noted that IIT Kharagpur does not offer any BE degree," Ghosal said in his statement.

He said documents suggesting that IEE received presidential approval for recognition and conduct of examination "appear to be fraudulent".

"The sequence of events makes one to believe a section of the people associated with so called IEE (India) have deliberately tried to involve the name of IIT Kgp to cash on its goodwill. Based on the allegedly forged documents, they also might have duped both the faculty of the Institute and the public at large," he said.

He said IIT Kgp has also cancelled allotment of quarters to IEE.

IEE based on allegedly forged documents posing itself as a professional body got allotment of one quarter within the campus of the institute in 2004.

"On June 20, 2007, it came to the notice of IIT Kgp that the allotted quarter to IEE is being used to operate an international university of modern science and technology. The Institute immediately cancelled the allotment and evicted the
occupant," he said.
