In an effort to give research a boost before the entry of foreign universities, the Indian Institute of Management-Bangalore (IIM-B) is on a hiring spree.

The country's premier institute for management studies has recruited 23 faculty since 2008 with doctoral degrees from top universities such as MIT, Wharton, Cornell, Insead and John Hopkins. Apart from that, IIM-B offers lot of incentives to faculty for their research activities.

In a presentation before the board of governors, the institute's dean (academic) Trilochan Sastry highlighted the significant improvement in research output in the last two years.

Some of the current incentives offered to faculty include participation in one international and national conference a year; opportunity to occupy research chairs and perks for publishing in journals.

IIM-B has also set apart a portion of consulting overhead for research grants and has introduced a fast-track promotion scheme. The office of international chaired by professor G Sabarinathan has forged collaborative ties for research with several leading international institutes.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of BoG, IIM-B, has asked the institute to constitute a research advisory council to guide the B-school's research initiatives.

In order to deal with shortage of faculty, IIM-B is planning to introduce a new cadre of professors with 15 years of corporate or organization-based experience. To be called professor of management practice, the faculty would concentrate on teaching and case writing rather than take purely academic research.

Professors of management practice will be broadly offered the same salary as regular professors, minus pension and campus housing. The faculty will initially be offered three to five year contracts.
