Polytechnic college education in Tamil Nadu is all set for a change in the syllabus from the next academic year onwards.
Academics have paid specific attention to the Communication English paper to make it more relevant and practical for students.
"An attempt is being made to encourage students to learn English through newspaper reading. There is a realisation that students can learn the language well only by reading more in English. We will be introducing a component wherein students would be required to read a newspaper report as part of their comprehension exercise and answer questions," commissioner for technical education Kumar Jayant said.
To begin with, the comprehension questions for which 15 marks are allotted will have a news report on subjects like cinema and sports to attract the attention of the students. Gradually, they would move on to more serious subjects.
To ensure that students do not memorise textbook solutions, they will be asked to write essays on new issues and letters to the editor on varied subjects.
"We have also decided to reduce the academic burden of the diploma students. As part of this initiative, first year diploma students will be required to study mathematics in two semesters from the next year instead of completing the syllabus in one semester. This will give the students time to understand the subject better," the commissioner for technical education added.
The basic engineering component has also been reorganised so that the diploma holders do not face hurdles when they move to engineering colleges through lateral entry admission directly into the second year Bachelors in Engineering (BE) course.
The directorate of technical education has hosted the draft syllabus on-line on its website www.tndte.com to receive the feedback from stake holders and incorporate changes.
