Speakers at a conference held here on Saturday stressed the need to develop a curriculum that it is challenging for the teacher and motivating, exciting and capable of arousing curiosity in a class of different learning styles.
Representatives of school managements and principals attended the conference on “Building a quality and growth model for school”, organised by iDiscoveri, a social enterprise with a vision to revive education in India. The skills and abilities to be cultivated in students with a supportive classroom environment, ways to motivate teachers and the qualities needed for a school for sustainable growth were the aspects discussed.
On the trends in education, Ramgopal Vallath, Chief Operating Officer, iDiscoveri, said 34,000 new schools will come up in the country over the next five years and every big business house would enter this sector. With increasing competition, quality of schools is also bound to increase and parents would have more choice, he added. Mr. Vallath said parents look for a school that provides the complete solution by focusing on better teaching and learning performance, identifying talent, doing away with tuitions and building communication skills.
R. Kishore Kumar, senior principal, St. John's International Residential School, said schools need to reorient, reorganise and rewrite classroom practices. “Learning should be related to instruction and collaborative learning should be encouraged,” he saidN. Vijayan, general secretary, Federation of Matriculation Schools' Associations in Tamil Nadu, said quality of teaching should be given importance by integrating technology with pedagogy apart from building thought process through skill-based activity, , he added.
Sheela Ragavan, principal, TI Matriculation Higher Secondary School and S. Vijayalakshmi, principal, MCTM Chidambaram Chettyar Matriculation School, highlighted how the XSEED programme, offered by iDiscoveri, has enriched teaching methodology.
