Students taking up bio-technology as a subject in their class twelfth examination should be able to qualify for entrance examination for MBBC courses, the MCI said.
The Medical Council of India has given approval for bio-technology to be included as a qualifying subject for MBBS entrance examinations.
"Bio-technology is a new subject. It deals a lot with biology. For MBBS, its relevance is increasing day-by-day. Whether it is green-technology or nano-technology, in any of these subjects, bio-technology is the basic principle," Dr Ranajit Chowdhary, MCI member, said.
"Thus, it would be good if doctors know the subject," he added. The qualifying subjects for MBBS entrance till now were physics, chemistry and biology. The MCI decision has to be approved by the Union Health Ministry following which it would come into effect
