President's approval to AMU centres in Murshidabad, Malappuram

Decks have been cleared for two off-campus centres of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) in West Bengal and Kerala after President Pratibha Patil gave her
approval for their establishment.

The President -- in her capacity as the Visitor has given her approval to the amendments in the statutes of the university. The centres at Murshidabad (West Bengal) and Malappuram (Kerala) will become operational from current academic year, AMU vice chancellor Prof P K Abdul Azis told reporters today.

Initially the two centres will start functioning from a rented accommodation provided by the two state governments. These centres will be "under the absolute authority of the Executive Council and court". By 2020, these would become full-fledged campuses with potential to become independent
universities," he said.

Earlier, delay in getting the approval of the Visitor's nominee had raised speculation regarding the fate of these two centres.
