On Wednesday, a day after the Union cabinet cleared the proposal to upgrade Bengal Engineering and Science University to an Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), there was jubilation on the campus.
State higher education minister Sudarshan Roychaudhuri said: “This is good news for us. It will benefit the institute. Under the new system, Besu students will be admitted through the All India Engineering Entrance Exams (AIEEE), with 50% of the seats reserved for state residents.”
A senior higher education department official, however, expressed doubts if Besu can take students through AIEEE.
On Wednesday, the vice-chancellor, Ajay Ray, said that the university has many plans which include setting up an academic complex, a 1,500-seater auditorium, a convention centre, new library, laboratories and a multi-storey hostel complex. (TNN)
