The Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU), one of the oldest engineering colleges in the country, has received the status of the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) and will now introduce integrated courses with dual degrees.
"We will offer integrated courses with dual degrees. The students will have to study for five years and will get both BTech and MTech degrees together," vice-chancellor Ajay Ray told a press conference here.
The integrated courses would start from next academic year. To study in the institute now, students will have to appear in the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), the VC said. Earlier students had to appear in the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) to study in the institute.
The Central government also wants to set up a regional research hub for solar energy in the institute's campus, Ray said.
The institute would now get financial grant from the Centre as it will not be under the West Bengal government's control any longer and would now be under the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development like the IITs, IIMs and Central universities, the VC added.
The Union Cabinet had yesterday cleared the proposal to upgrade BESU to the status of IIEST. BESU was initially established as Bishop's College in November 2, 1856 occupying three rooms in the Writers Building to meet the requirement of trained engineering personnel for the Public Works department. It became a civil engineering college affiliated to the Calcutta University in May 1857.
In 1992 it got the status of Deemed university and in 2004 became a university with the present name BESU.
