Eyeing the minority vote for the next assembly elections, minister for minority affairs Abdus Sattar laid the foundation stone of the state’s first English-medium madarsa education hub at Uluberia’s Chengail in Howrah on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Sattar said that the government would set up 12 such education hubs all over the state. “The state government has already spent Rs 70 crore on madarsa education. There will be 10% reservation for minorities. All facilities from primary to higher secondary education, library to laboratory and vocational training courses will be held here,” he added.
The education hub at Chengail will come up on five acre, with Rs 8 crore already being spent. “The cost may increase... construction of the building will be completed by February next year,” Sattar said. Stating that a team from Chhattisgarh had recently paid a visit, the minister added, “The chief minister of Chhattisgarh had contacted us, asking us to explore the possibility of the madarsa education system of Chhattisgarh within the West Bengal madrasa.”
The state government then spotted Chengail as a strategic location. The area is dominated by minorities and a new link road is coming up from Uluberia on NH-6 for better connectivity. “Now the stretch is about 20 km, but with the new road, the distance will come down to just 4 km,” said an official.
