Ganjam implements teacher on call scheme

Ganjam is probably the first district in Orissa to implement the teacher on call scheme by appointing as many as 47 retired teachers, including nine women.

These teachers were appointed in 40 different schools in four blocks and Berhampur Municipal Corporation area under the Berhampur education district.

District Collector V K Pandian handed over the appointment letters yesterday to these teachers, who willingly came forward to continue their teaching, despite retirement from service.

The state government has launched retired teacher call scheme recently to tide over the teacher shortage. Under the scheme, retired teachers below 65 years of age will be appointed in schools facing shortage without any remuneration.

"In a short span, we have got very good response in the district, where several retired teachers opted for extending help," the district collector said.

Sources said while Berhampur education district has received 67 applications so far, Aska has got highest number of 102 applications including a retired woman teacher, Bhanjanagar 41 and Chhatrapur 33 applications. Ganjam has four education districts.

Although we received 67 applications, 47 were chosen for appointment for the first phase, said District Inspector of Schools (Berhampur) P K Padhy.
