Punjab government ordered that schools must set aside at least one period everyday for physical education and announced schemes to evaluate PE teachers.
As part of the "Khedo Punjab" programme of the state government, education minister Upinderjit Kaur announced the impending launch of block-level tournaments to which each school has to send at least one team.
She said a well-designed competition structure would be formed in consultation with higher academic institutions to harness sporting talent.
"The health and well-being of each child admitted in the schools is my utmost concern," said the minister. Presiding over a meeting to develop sports in the schools, she said,
"The performance of physical education teachers would be evaluated on the basis of achievements of the players produced by them ans this will be monitored by the district Assistant Education Officer concerned."
The minister directed the school heads to ramp up their games infrastructure and said PE teachers must be equipped with the latest information with the help of refresher courses.
